How to use it
- 1Select the language of the text in your image from the language dropdown.
- 2Drop your image onto the drop zone, or click to browse for a file.
- 3Wait for OCR to complete — the first run downloads the language model (~10 MB).
- 4Copy the extracted text using the Copy button, or select and copy any part manually.
Common use cases
- Extract text from a screenshot of an article, email, or document you can't copy from.
- Convert a scanned PDF page saved as an image into editable text.
- Capture text from a photo of a sign, menu, or whiteboard.
- Digitise handwritten or printed notes so you can search and edit them.
- Pull contact details off a photo of a business card.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. All OCR processing runs entirely in your browser using Tesseract.js, a WebAssembly port of the open-source Tesseract OCR engine. Your image never leaves your device.
- Why does the first run take longer?
- Tesseract.js downloads the language model for your selected language on first use (roughly 10 MB for English). After that, the model is cached by your browser and subsequent runs are much faster.
- What image formats are supported?
- Any image format your browser can decode: PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, TIFF, and GIF. For best accuracy, use a clear, high-resolution image with good contrast between text and background.
- How accurate is the text extraction?
- Accuracy depends on image quality. Clean printed text in a well-lit photo or screenshot typically achieves 95%+ accuracy. Handwritten text, low-contrast images, or heavily stylised fonts will be less accurate.
- Which languages are supported?
- 18 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Thai.
