Frequently asked questions
- What is a New Zealand IRD number?
- An IRD number is a unique 8 or 9-digit identifier issued by Inland Revenue New Zealand (Te Tari Taake) to individuals, businesses, and other entities. It is used in all interactions with Inland Revenue — income tax, GST, KiwiSaver, and employment — and is required when starting work, opening a bank account, or registering for GST.
- How is the IRD check digit calculated?
- Pad the number to 9 digits. Apply weights [3,2,7,6,5,4,3,2] to digits 1–8 and sum. If the remainder mod 11 is 0, the check digit is 0; otherwise it is 11 minus the remainder. If that gives 10, retry with weights [7,4,3,2,5,2,7,6]. If still 10, the base number is invalid.
- Are these IRD numbers real?
- No. Generated numbers pass the mathematical check-digit rule and fall within the valid range (10,000,000–150,000,000), but they are not registered with Inland Revenue. Any real tax system that validates against the IRD registry will correctly reject them as unregistered.
- Can IRD numbers be 8 digits?
- Yes. Older IRD numbers have 8 digits. When validating, the tool pads 8-digit inputs to 9 by prepending a zero before applying the check-digit algorithm — this matches Inland Revenue's documented procedure.
- Is my data sent anywhere?
- No. All generation and validation runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
