Ready to record

Your browser will ask you to choose what to share.

Mic audio will be included — turn it off above if you'd like a silent recording.

Your recording never leaves your device.

SnapRecord uses the browser's built-in Screen Capture and MediaRecorder APIs entirely in-memory. No video is uploaded, transmitted, or stored anywhere outside your browser tab.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose a capture source: Screen (tab, window, or full display), Camera (webcam only), or Screen + Cam (screen with picture-in-picture webcam overlay).
  2. 2Toggle the mic on or off, pick a quality preset (480p / 720p / 1080p / 4K), then click Start recording.
  3. 3Grant the browser permission when prompted. A 3-second countdown gives you time to get ready.
  4. 4While recording, use Pause / Resume if you need a break, then click Stop when you're done.
  5. 5Review the recording in the export panel. Trim the start or end, toggle audio mute if needed, then choose MP4 or WebM.
  6. 6Click Download — the file is built and saved entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

Common use cases

  • Create quick product walkthroughs or bug reports without installing any software.
  • Record yourself presenting slides with your face visible in a webcam PiP overlay.
  • Capture a webcam-only video message for async communication with teammates.
  • Document UI bugs by recording the exact sequence of steps and exporting as MP4.
  • Make tutorial clips, trim off the setup and teardown, then open in SnapEdit to add captions.

Frequently asked questions

What export formats does SnapRecord support?
SnapRecord exports MP4 (H.264) or WebM (VP9). MP4 is the most compatible — it plays on all devices and is accepted by every video platform. WebM is a good choice for web embedding. Choose the format in the export panel before downloading.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser tab using the Screen Capture and MediaRecorder APIs. No video data is ever transmitted to any server.
Can I record system audio (not just my mic)?
On Windows and some Linux setups, Chrome lets you include system audio when sharing a tab or app — look for the 'Share audio' checkbox in the browser share picker. On macOS, system audio capture requires a virtual audio driver; the microphone is the reliable option there.
What quality options are available?
You can record at 480p, 720p, 1080p, or 4K. The default is 1080p at 16 Mbps — a good balance of quality and file size. For screen content with sharp text, 1080p or higher is recommended.
Can I mute the audio on the exported file?
Yes — the export panel has a mute toggle. Enabling it strips the audio track from the downloaded file without re-recording.
Does the trim feature re-encode the video?
Trimming uses MediaBunny to perform a fast remux — it cuts the file to the selected range without full re-encoding, so it's near-instant. For more advanced edits, open the file in SnapEdit to cut, merge, add captions, and more.
Why does recording stop when I switch tabs?
If you were capturing a specific browser tab, some browsers throttle or pause capture when that tab loses focus. Choose 'Entire screen' or 'Window' in the share picker to record without this restriction.
What is the maximum recording length?
There is no hard time limit. Recordings accumulate chunks in memory, so available RAM is the practical ceiling. For sessions over 30 minutes, a dedicated screen-recorder app may be more reliable.
